How to Pick the Right Rug for Your Space

How to Pick the Right Rug for Your Space

When it comes to decorating our homes and picking out furniture and accessories, sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin. Our individual tastes and preferences can be difficult to pinpoint, especially if you don’t know much about design. Whether your apartment still looks like a college dorm, or you’re interested in changing up your style a bit, we’ve got you (and your floor!) covered. Follow along and we’ll give you some great tips on how to pick the right rug design to fit your style, home, and personality.

Evaluate Your Furniture

One of the best ways to determine what kind of rug you should buy is to first take a look at the furniture in the room you intend to use it in. You’ll want to create contrast with the rug that you choose, while also complementing the overall look of the room. So for example, if you have solid, light-colored furniture, you’ll want to look for a dark-colored rug with a pattern. Likewise, if you have darker furniture, then your overall look would benefit from an area rug that’s lighter in color.

Not sure how to mix and match colors? One easy trick to know is to try and stay within color families/palettes. Warm colors like red, brown, tan and yellow all go well together for complimentary colors. Cool colors like green, blue and gray also blend easily together. If you want to create a look that “pops” simply add one contrasting color to a decorative accent in your home. Consider a bold red area rug to punch up your beige living room furniture, or a navy area rug to add depth to gray sectional sofas.

Evaluate Your Personal Style

What does your personal style have to do with the way you decorate your home? It has everything to do with it! Like your wardrobe, your home décor is an outward expression of your style, tastes, and personality. It’s important for you to match your personal style to your home décor, not only as a matter of outward expression but so you can ultimately feel the most comfortable in your personal space.

Some of the most popular home décor styles today can easily match up with anyone’s personal tastes. You may not fit perfectly into one box, so don’t be afraid to pick and choose from a few different home décor styles to find the look that’s right for you.

*Farmhouse: This style is rooted in sophisticated, country-themed motifs. Think whitewashed wood, rustic signs, vintage touches, and rural imagery. Look for farmhouse area rugs in white, gray, cream and black with traditional scroll-work or geometric prints to pull this look together.

*Bohemian: Bohemians are free spirits that can live in the country or the city. Dotted with eclectic finds from around the world and bright, colorful furnishings, the Bohemian style is bold and unique. Look for Bohemian area rugs with classic scroll motifs, contemporary colors and exotic designs.

*Modern/Contemporary/Minimalist: Fans of modern decor like clean, open spaces and bright lighting, with few patterns and a focus on shape and design. Opt for Minimalist area rugs with neutral hues in black, white and gray with understated or geometric patterns to keep the same aesthetic or go for bold colors to make a statement and draw attention to the center of the room.

Think About Your Living Situation

Do you live alone, or do you share a space with 7 messy kids, 3 dogs, and a cat? Your home life will definitely dictate what type of rug you should buy, and for good reason. If you generally don’t get many visitors and leave your shoes at the front door, a white area rug will easily work in any room in your home. However, if you have a lot of traffic come through your home or office, you may want to opt for a darker color, like a gray 8 x 10 area rug. A patterned area rug is another ideal choice for spaces that are sure to see messy paws, spilled drinks and a lot of day-to-day wear as they will look the best over time.

Picking a rug design for your home can be exhausting, but ultimately, it should be a fun and easy way to update your space. Take inventory of what would work best for your personal style, your lifestyle and what would best complement your existing furniture, and you’ll be on your way to selecting the best rug design for you!
